The Mandelbrot Set

The escape-time field of z -> z^2 + c, with membership decided by iterating each pixel's own orbit under the strict |z| > 2 test rather than by any analytic cardioid formula. Colour is a function of the smooth count nu = n - log2(ln|z_n| / ln 2) alone, measured at bailout radius 2^8, and repeats with period 1 in nu, so each ring is half the width of the one outside it. The bands fade to their local mean where the distance estimate puts them below print resolution.
