Newton's method applied to f(z) = tan(z) - 1. The step simplifies to f / f' = sin z cos z - cos^2 z, so the map is entire and each pole of the tangent becomes a repelling fixed point of multiplier 2 that the basins pile onto. Off the real axis tan z tends to +/- i, so 72 percent of the frame never converges and is painted as cold near-black voids whose coarse escape bands are the scalloped petals. The acid-green ramp is windowed onto step counts 3.4 to 14.2.
